Cynthia A. Sandor pens new memoir of her mother’s experiences as a Hitler Youth
Based on a personal journal, ‘Through Innocent Eyes’ tells of Gertrude Kerchner’s time in Landjahr
OLDSMAR, Fla. – The National Socialistic upbringing in the League of German Girls, or Bund Deutscher Mädel, used paramilitary-like disciplinary measures to build loyalty and moral character in young girls. Coupled with pagan rituals, songs and folklore, Cynthia A. Sandor’s new book, “Through Innocent Eyes: The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth” (published by BDM History), captures the self-actualization of her mother Gertrude Kerschner, who as a child, was a member of Landjahr Lager, (Country Service Year Camp).
“Four months before my mother, Gertrude, passed away from bone cancer, I found her handwritten, green cloth journal,” Sandor shares. “The faded torn red cloth emblem of a sword piercing an Odal rune is glued to the right hand, lower corner of the book, bound together on the left with a simple green string. This is her personal journal that she wrote in 1941 while she was in Landjahr Lager, located in Seidorf, Niederschlesien, during World War II, today in Sosnowka, Poland.
“Through Innocent Eyes” is a biography based upon Gertrude Kerchner’s personal journal from the time she was serving in the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Maedel). This true-life story showcases her transition from childhood to adulthood and the disciplines she learned.
